Rat-Bite Fever

Rare Disease Found in New Mexico

Dr. Lucy Boulanger said she'd never heard of rat-bite fever until she got a report in 1996 that a northern New Mexico teenager had contracted it.

The case made the front page of a weekly report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, in February 1998. The disease is rare, and the federal agency wanted to feature the case to make doctors aware to keep an eye out for it, Boulanger said.
