Closer Scrutiny of Links Between Chronic Disease and Microorganisms Needed

Over the past decade, infectious agents have emerged as critical factors in the development of chronic illness and disability.

The implications of such discoveries are great, for prevention or treatment of infection now potentially can limit morbidity and burden in certain previously "non-communicable" conditions, said U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researcher Siobhan O'Connor at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases co-sponsored by the CDC and the American Society for Microbiology and held March 8-12, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia.
