Outbreak Response Highlights Need for Improved Readiness, Officials Say

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, March 30th, 1998

Vaccine trials using volunteers subjects would be supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), officials with the organizations said at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The conference was held March 8-12, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter M.A.J. McKenna said the "bird flu" outbreak that occurred in Hong Kong in late 1997 was a hot topic of conversation at the conference ("'Bird Flu' Cases Bring Call for Vaccine Tests," AJC, March 12, 1998:E4).
