Phase I Trials: Live Dengue Vaccines Safe, Immunogenic

Four single-serotype candidate dengue virus vaccines were safe and induced strain-specific antibodies in an extended Phase I clinical trial.

There are four dengue serotypes. R. Edelman of the University of Maryland and colleagues created live, attenuated vaccines against each type by serial passage in primary dog kidney (PDK) cells.

Only one the 18 healthy volunteers receiving the vaccines developed a fever, and this was of much shorter duration and lower intensity (3 days, 102.1(degree)F maximum) than that seen in dengue fever.
