Scientists See Further Threat from Hong Kong Bird Flu

Scientists have discovered that a bird virus which killed several people in Hong Kong in 1997 was actually comprised of two viral strains, complicating the battle against the virus, experts said.

Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that the "bird flu" outbreak in the territory was caused by two different strains of the H5N1 virus.

The CDC released the findings to a medical conference in Hong Kong, experts said.

"Nancy (Cox of the CDC) had demonstrated that there are two H5N1 viruses infecting humans in Hong Kong, both of which were able to cause severe infection and death," said John...
