According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held March 8-11, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "A variety of mycobacterial species are frequently observed in secondary infections in AIDS patients, and there is some evidence to suggest that HIV replication is increased in the presence of these mycobacterial pathogens. We have established a kinetic model to evaluate the effects of opportunistic pathogens on the replication of HIV in quiescent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
