Second BCG Course Unnecessary in Nonendemic Areas

The efficacy of revaccinating against tuberculosis with bacillus Calmette-Guerin is extremely low in countries not endemic for tuberculosis, according to a report from Finland.

"Revaccinating tuberculin-negative children has no scientific basis," Marianna M. Tala-Heikkila and colleagues wrote ("Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Revaccination Questionable with Low Tuberculosis Incidence," American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, April 1998;157:1324-1327).

"It has even been suspected that children with weak tuberculin sensitivity may be at risk of reactivation from focal reactions after BCG vaccination."
