Community Has Critical Responsibility in Preventing Teens From Cigarette Use

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that more than a third of high school students who have ever tried cigarette smoking have escalated to patterns of regular use before they graduate.

Most young people underestimate the allure of cigarettes and their addictiveness, accounting for the significant number of teen smokers shifting from experimentation to regular use and later finding it difficult to quit, said CDC researcher Michael P.
