Experts Urge Doctors to Control Asthma Early, Prevent 'Airway Remodeling'

Two out of three patients are unaware that undertreated asthma is likely to cause permanent, obstructive lung damage, and most have no idea that currently available medications can prevent or reverse the process, according to a recent survey.

Experts speaking at "Asthma Management: Critical Choices in a World of New Treatment Options," a roundtable discussion held May 18, 1998, in New York, called for increased patient and doctor education to raise awareness of available therapies that prevent such damage.
