U.S. Sees Higher Gonorrhea Drug Resistance

Domestic cases of gonorrhea have shown increased resistance to one of the remaining drugs still effective in treating the sexually transmitted disease, U.S. health officials said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said two cases of gonorrhea identified in San Diego, California, in 1997 showed the highest level of fluoroquinolone resistance ever reported in the United States.

Strains of gonorrhea resistant to the class of antibiotics known as flouroquinolones are already well-established in Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines, the CDC said.
