U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers Chou-Pong Pau and colleagues mapped a dominant epitope within the HHV-8 ORF 65-encoded protein to an 8-amino-acid (aa) sequence (RKPPSGKK [aa 162 to 169]) by an amino acid replacement method ("Mapping and Serodiagnostic Application of a Dominant Epitope within the Human Herpesvirus 8 ORF 65-Encoded Protein," Journal of Clinical Microbiology, June 1998;36:1574-1577).
They used a 14-aa peptide (P4) encompassing this epitope as the antigen to develop an EIA for HHV-8 antibodies.
