CDC Reports Multistate Outbreak of Hemolysis

Blood tubing sets have been blamed as the cause of a multistate outbreak of hemolysis in hemodialysis patients.

From May 13-23, 1998, 30 patients from three states developed hemolysis while undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Two of the patients died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, published in the June 19, 1998 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report a summary of preliminary findings of the investigations in the states of Nebraska and Maryland ("Multistate Outbreak of Hemolysis in Hemodialysis Patients - Nebraska and Maryland, 1998," MMWR, 1998;47:483-484).
