CDC Calls for Development of New TB Vaccine

The following is a statement from Helene Gayle, MD, MPH, director, National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

In recommendations released August 20, 1998, the federal Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis (ACET) issued a national call for the development of a vaccine for tuberculosis (TB).

TB, a potentially fatal airborne disease, now kills more adults worldwide each year than any other infectious disease. CDC strongly supports these recommendations and believes it is time for the U.S. to take the next step toward eliminating tuberculosis as a public health threat. A...
