More Weapons Needed Against Emerging Diseases

Better-equipped laboratories and more surveillance are needed if the United States is to effectively battle "mad cow disease," drug-resistant bacteria and other emerging threats, health officials said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a nationwide network for surveillance and response was needed to ensure prompt identification of emerging infectious diseases.

"We need better surveillance in place so that we have better estimates of the magnitude of foodborne and many other emerging and reemerging infectious diseases," said Dr. Jim Hughes, CDC's National Centre for Infectious Diseases.
