Student Vaccines Start To Combat Rise in Hepatitis A

Fremont County, Wyoming, has started its efforts to combat a rise in the number of residents infected by the virus by vaccinating seventh-graders for hepatitis A.

Students in Riverton and Lander are receiving shots under the voluntary program, while students in Shoshoni, Wind River and Dubois schools received them earlier.

Seventeen cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed in the county in 1998 so far, said state epidemiologist Dr. Gayle Miller. Five were confirmed in 1997 and none were confirmed in 1996.
