Child Sexual Abuse Contributes To AIDS Epidemic

Within the hidden epidemic of sexual abuse of children lurks another epidemic: AIDS.

The Sexual Transmission of HIV in Children Working Group, sponsored by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has issued a report on all cases of confirmed or suspected child sexual abuse leading to HIV infection of the child.

The team's report, with CDC researcher Mary Lou Lindegren as lead author, noted that only 26 of the 9136 U.S. children with HIV or AIDS reported by December 1996 had confirmed or suspected HIV transmission via sexual abuse. But they suggested that their findings represented only part of the problem.
