According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 47th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, that was to have been held October 18-22, 1998, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, "RTS,S is a candidate malaria vaccine consisting of a recombinant Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite (CS) protein that includes the repeat and carboxy terminal regions covalently linked to the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). We have successfully used a rhesus model to select promising RTS,S formulations on the basis of antibody, delayed type hypersensitivity, and lymphoproliferative responses.
