A low number of states reported cases of varicella during 1997, and reporting from participating states was incomplete, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia ("Evaluation of Varicella Reporting to the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System - United States, 1972-1997, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report [MMWR], January 29, 1999;48(3):55-58).
