Prison Outbreaks Reach Community

Two separate tuberculosis outbreaks which began in California prisons illustrate the threat of undiagnosed tuberculosis to the community at large.

In both instances the index case was HIV positive and in both cases contacts were not screened for months, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

Fourteen inmates in one outbreak (prison A) were subsequently diagnosed with tuberculosis and 15 inmates from the second outbreak (prison B) were diagnosed with the disease.
