There are only two official repositories of the smallpox virus: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia; and the Russian State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology in Koltsovo, Novosibirsk.
But the editors of the journal The Lancet insist that the world must heed the warnings of experts who claim that there are other stockpiles of the deadly virus. Its intended or unintended escape, they say, is only a matter of time.
