First Human Type A(H9N2) Infections

Two Hong Kong children are the first human cases of a new influenza variant, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The variant is influenza A(H9N2). The infected children, girls aged one and four years, became ill but recovered. Both were hospitalized in March 1999 in Hong Kong.

"Investigations are under way in Hong Kong to determine the potential impact of this new subtype in humans," the CDC noted.
