Hepatitis B Vaccine Is Safe, Says U.S. Government

U.S. government scientists say hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective, despite reports that it can cause serious and even life-threatening side effects.

Testifying on May 18, 1999, before a House subcommittee investigating vaccine safety, officials said use of the vaccine has been monitored for 15 years and it has not been proven to be the cause of any deaths and is only rarely linked to serious side effects.

"Vaccines are extremely safe, but they are not risk-free," said Susan S. Ellenberg, an epidemiologist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "While serious complications are extremely rare, they do occur."
