Link Between Contaminated Water and Stomach Ulcers

A direct link between the presence of Helicobacter pylori in well water and stomach ulcers in persons drinking water from contaminated wells has been found.

H. pylori is now recognized as the organism responsible for gastric ulcers and certain types of stomach cancers. In the U.S., approximately 2.5 million new H. pylori infections occur each year. Peptic ulcer disease affects nearly 5 million people with treatment costs exceeding $4 billion each year. Approximately 16,000 deaths are attributed annually to complications of peptic ulcer disease.
