According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 33rd National Immunization Conference, held June 22-25, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, "Background: A high prevalence of hepatitis B infection (HBV) exists in Alaska, especially among Alaska Natives. The incidence of acute HBV for Alaska Natives was the highest in the United States. Objective(s): In 1983, a joint Indian Health Service, State of Alaska Hepatitis B Immunization Program was instituted to eliminate new HBV cases in Alaska.
