According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 33rd National Immunization Conference, held June 22-25, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, "Background: Hepatitis B causes more deaths each year than all other childhood vaccine-preventable diseases combined. Immigrant Asian/Pacific Island (API) populations have among the highest hepatitis B virus carriage rates in the United States. Promotion of 'catch-up' hepatitis B vaccination for older U.S. Asian and Pacific Island children and assessment of hepatitis B immunization coverage rates in this population are of special interest to the CDC's National Immunization Program.
