Obstetricians Should Test At-Risk Women for Hepatitis C

Selective testing for hepatitis C virus based on risk factors should be a part of prenatal care, according to a clinical commentary published in the December 1999 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Most infected women are unaware of their condition and may pass the virus to their infants. Mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis C virus occurs in approximately 5 percent of live births to women with the virus.

Nearly 4 million Americans are infected with hepatitis C, which can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer or failure, and death. Overall prevalence is 1.8 percent, but rates are significantly higher among minorities and reproductive-aged...
