Genital Herpes a Substantial Financial Burden on U.S.

Physician visits and drugs used in the treatment of genital herpes costs the United States over $200 million annually, according to a study published in Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

"Approximately 45 million Americans have serologic evidence of HSV-2 infection and HSV-2 seroprevalence has increased 30% over the past two decades," according to G.Y. Tao and colleagues at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("Medical care expenditures for genital herpes in the United States," Sexually Transmitted Diseases, January 2000;27(1):32-38).
