Program Successfully Helps Poor Women Get Screening

The Oregon Health Plan has been successful in helping to meet the medical needs of Oregon's poorest citizens, particularly in helping poor women to get mammograms, CDC researchers say.

"In 1994, Oregon implemented the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), extending health care coverage under a system of capitated managed care to uninsured citizens living below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)," according to J.A. Schillenger and colleagues at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("Health care reform in Oregon: The impact of the Oregon health plan on utilization of mammography," American Journal of Preventive Medicine, January 2000;18(1):11-17).
