Advocacy Group Says Diabetes Drug May Spur Heart Failure; Doctors Say Statements Are Misleading

Consumer advocates say the diabetes drug Rezulin, already notorious for destroying some patients' livers, also may be linked to 56 cases of heart failure, according to the Associated Press.

Also, diabetics need warning that two similar medicines touted as better alternatives to Rezulin are not proven safer, the consumer group Public Citizen concluded after analyzing hundreds of pages of government documents about the drugs.

But Richard A Dickey, MD, FACP, FACE, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), says a press release on diabetes drugs issued by Public Citizen on March 7, 2000, "disturbs endocrinologists."
