Endocrinologists Respond to FDA Decision on Rezulin

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) encourages physicians and their patients to consider alternate drugs for diabetes treatment after a recent request by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove the drug Rezulin (troglitazone) from the market in the U.S. because of reports of liver damage.

Alternative drugs (glitazones) for diabetes are available, including similar drugs called Actos (pioglitazone) and Avandia (rosiglitazone). These drugs have not been reported to have liver damage effects as often as Rezulin. They may have no more likelihood of causing liver damage than a placebo.
