Possible Animal Source of Hepatitis E Virus Identified

An increased incidence of antibodies to hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV) among pig farmers has led scientists to associate pigs and HEV infection.

J. Drobeniuc and colleagues from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and the National Center for Preventive Medicine in Chisinau, Moldova, conducted a study of HEV-infected pig farmers and a group of HEV-infected people who had no association with pigs and compared these subjects with healthy pig farmers matched by age, gender, and residence.
