The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, will make the funds available to 43 states.
In Mississippi, state health officer Ed Thompson said, "We're focusing on enhancing two areas, epidemiology and surveillance, that will allow us to detect the diseases more quickly. The speed in which we can detect this can mean the difference in a few hundred and a few thousand deaths."
