Rare Co-infection Documented in Taiwan

Scientists have detected cases of hepatitis A and E virus (HAV and HEV) co-infection among residents of Taiwan, though the source of the infections is uncertain.

Based on the report by C.H. Wang, a scientist with the Taipei Center for Disease Control in Taiwan, and colleagues, HAV and HEV are both prone to transmission via water, particularly in less-developed areas, although HAV is generally spread through direct contact or contaminated food in more developed locales. A rare instance of combined HAV immunoglobulin M (IgM) and HEV IgM was identified by these researchers after examining serum from patients living with aberrant liver and bile functions in several areas...
