 Mycobacterium bovis a Leading Cause of TB at Mexico-U.S. Border

According to University of California at San Diego investigators, a large number of new tuberculosis (TB) cases identified at San Diego hospitals in the last few years have been caused by Mycobacterium bovis, a zoonotic disease transmitted by infected cows.

These infections indicate that pasteurization laws in Mexico need to be more strictly enforced, according to study authors (W.M. Danker et al., "Mycobacterium bovis as a significant cause of tuberculosis in children residing along the United States-Mexico border in the Baja California region," Pediatrics, 2000;105(6):U45-U49).
