Respiratory Illnesses Baffle Officials

Hospital and public health officials are baffled by recent cases in which otherwise healthy adults have been stricken by mysterious respiratory ailments. The cases, three from southwest Missouri and one from southeast Kansas, all occurred during July and early August and were detected by emergency medical staff at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri. They, in turn, alerted public health officials. One of the cases turned out to be a tick-borne disease, but the causes of the other three remain unknown.
