Mortality Rates Lower for Patients in Treatment Centers

The July 15, 2000, issue of Blood highlighted an article that compared mortality among persons with hemophilia who received medical care from U.S. federally funded hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs) to that of those who received their care outside of the HTC system. Lead author, J. Michael Soucie, PhD, of the hematologic disease branch of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) based in Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues found that after accounting for differences in the severity of hemophilia and other underlying conditions (including HIV, inhibitors, and liver disease), patients who received their care at HTCs were 40% less likely to die than...
