Poor Health in Childhood Linked to Adulthood Diseases, Despite Socioeconomic Status

Regardless of socioeconomic status, people with a childhood history of ill health are more prone to certain diseases in adulthood, especially cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular conditions, arthritis, and rheumatism, according to a Pennsylvania State University researcher. "Our findings show that persons with childhood health problems were twice as likely to develop cancer or chronic lung disease by late middle age. The prevalence of arthritis was about 33% higher among this group. However, they were not more likely to have diabetes," says Dr. Mark D. Hayward, professor of sociology and demography and director of Penn State's Population Research Institute. ...
