CDC Study Reports Genetic Variation in Lassa Virus Strains

Genetic diversity prevails in Lassa virus strains and these variations probably came about as a function of geography instead of time, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers have reported in the Journal of Virology.

"The arenavirus Lassa virus causes Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever that is endemic in the countries of Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea, and perhaps elsewhere in West Africa," stated Michael D. Bowen and co-authors in the journal article ("Genetic diversity among Lassa virus strains," J Virol, 2000;74(15):6992-7004).
