Death Toll Remains Stable as Experts Seek to Contain Outbreak

As of October 23, 2000, for the first time in more than a week, the death toll from the Ebola outbreak in northern Uganda had not increased during a 24-hour period. Dr. Sam Okware, who chairs a task force set up to deal with the outbreak, said on October 23, that all new cases of the virus were identified in the previous 24 hours, but deaths were being prevented by early detection of the virus. Ebola, which causes a type of hemorrhagic fever for which there is no known cure, has so far claimed 54 lives and infected at least 106 others around the town of Gulu, 362 kilometers (225 miles) north of Kampala.
