U.S. Congress Passes Needlestick Safety and Prevention Bill

On October 26, 2000, the U.S. Senate passed a U.S. House of Representatives' bill, H.R. 5178, the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000. H.R. 5178 has strong bipartisan support and unanimously passed both chambers. The legislation updates the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard to account for advances in safety technology that will help prevent needlestick injuries to health care workers. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are over 300,000 needlestick injuries that occur in hospitals each year and as many as 800,000 that occur in all health care...
