Live Vaccines, Poor Surveillance Threaten Eradication in Western Pacific Region

The eradication of poliomyelitis from the western pacific region was due to be declared on October 29, 2000. However, two studies in the October 28, 2000, issue of The Lancet highlight the remaining hurdles that must be overcome before polio can be eradicated globally. In the first study, Hiromu Yoshida and colleagues from Hirosaki University School of Medicine, Japan, studied the molecular characteristics of type 3 polioviruses isolated from environmental samples (sewage and river water) in Japan.
