Public Health Policies Successful in Limiting Salmonella

U.S. government researchers say that diligent public health practices have helped to curtail the number of new cases of Salmonella infections in recent years. Salmonella enteritidis (SE) causes severe gastrointestinal illness in people who eat contaminated foods. It is mainly associated with the consumption of undercooked or raw eggs and egg products. Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture analyzed SE surveillance data collected over an 18-year period between 1980 and 1998.
