Lamivudine Has Protective Effect Against Hepatitis B in HIV Patients

Individuals who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are highly susceptible to a number of other illnesses, including tuberculosis, hepatitis, and certain types of cancer. Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently presented evidence that HIV infected individuals who are at risk for acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) might be protected against that disease by adding lamivudine therapy to their antiretroviral drug regimens. This suggestion was made as the result of a review of patient information in records from HIV surveillance programs in 10 cities in the United States. ...
