New Program Will Help Keep Elderly Safe from Fires, Falls

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant will help people like Elva G. avoid falls around darkened steps, but probably won't be able to help during her ping-pong games.

Though the 82-year-old can't remember all the details from a CDC test program she took part in two years ago, Elva still benefits from the message preached: make her surroundings safer.

The CDC during October 2000 announced $350,000 in grants to five states, including Arkansas, for programs designed to eliminate falls and fire injuries among the elderly.
