Weight Loss Can Decrease Mortality Risk

Researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention argue that for overweight type 2 diabetics, the decision to lose weight may be a life-saver.

D.F. Williamson and colleagues wanted to see if the death rate in overweight patients with type 2 diabetes was affected by weight loss efforts. They compared medical information, including mortality rates, from almost 5,000 overweight diabetics enrolled in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study I ("Intentional weight loss and mortality among overweight individuals with diabetes," Diabetes Care, October 2000;23(10):1499-1504).
