Starving Bacteria Elude Diagnostic Tests

The virulent Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacterium can lose its ability to be detected by certain diagnostic tests if it has experienced extended periods without food, said researchers from the National Institute of Health Sciences in Japan. They reported their results in the December 2000 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology (Y.
