Malarone Recommended for Prevention and Treatment

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, recently changed its recommendation on malaria to include Glaxo Wellcome Inc.'s (GLX) Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride) as another option for the prevention and treatment of malaria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug in July 2000. The CDC now recommends Malarone as one of three options for the prevention of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, including those infections acquired in areas with chloroquine-resistant strains.
