Genetic Basis of Disease Caused by Environmental Pollution Studied

The U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it has established a program that will apply techniques for studying gene and protein activity to identify unknown toxic substances more quickly and help treat people at the greatest risk for diseases caused by environmental pollutants - or toxicants.

The technology will slash the time and expense of testing chemicals for potential harmful effect and make regulatory decision-making quicker and more scientifically-based, according to Kenneth Olden, PhD, NIEHS.
