African Americans Disproportionately Affected by STDs

Following years of steady decline, gonorrhea infections among African Americans increased by more than 5% from 1997 to 1999, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC report, released at the National STD Prevention Conference, held December 4-7, 2000, also shows that gonorrhea continues to disproportionately affect African Americans compared to other racial groups. Similarly, new data show that genital herpes continues to disproportionately affect African Americans, especially young African-American women.
