Poor Reading Skills Stop Inmates from Learning Tuberculosis Materials

Some Massachusetts inmates lack the reading skills necessary to read and understand tuberculosis education materials, according to workers at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston.

Although 61% inmates who participated in the public health study had finished an average of 11.3 years of education, their reading levels were low, based on a test that measures reading ability, the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM). On average, inmates possessed reading skills that were comparable with 7th and 8th grade educations.
